Gimme 5: Why I enjoyed the Magic City Classic
It’s more than a game; it’s a weeklong affair in Birmingham, Alabama
ESPN analyst Jay Walker has seen them all, and his favorite historically black college classic football game is the annual Magic City Classic in Birmingham, Alabama, between Alabama State and Alabama A&M, and its week of festivities.
These are his top five reasons that the MC Classic is the best:
No. 5: Tailgate Tuesday, when the tailgating begins before the game.
No. 4: Golfing on the Robert Trent Jones courses around Birmingham.
No. 3: Saturday’s parade featuring bands from around the state.
No. 2: The end-of-game entertainment. This year it was Gucci Mane. Previously it’s been T.I., Ludacris, Bootsy Collins, Morris Day and Bell Biv DeVoe.
No. 1: The game, Alabama State vs. Alabama A&M, at historic Legion Field.
Honorable mention: Celebrity-watching — this year, it was movie star Don Cheadle — and Dreamland Bar-B-Que.
Gimme 5: The best this season in the MEAC
Jay Walker’s player of the year is Howard QB Caylin Newton
Jason Garrett is not as bad as you think
He’s actually outperforming other head coaches who are on the hot seat
Caylin Newton matures as Howard’s QB
He’s the MEAC’s offensive leader by a wide margin
