SWAC commissioner discusses the ups and downs in the conference
Mark Wright talks with the SWAC Commissioner Duer Sharp on the progress of the SWAC
There’s a lot to the job when you’re the commissioner of a Division I athletic conference. And, depending on the day, you’re arbitrator one minute, peacemaker the next and almost always a negotiator.
For Duer Sharp, commissioner of the 10-institution Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) since 2008, the larger focus is always on student-athlete development.
“At the end of the day, it’s our job to make sure our students get a good education and come out of our schools as well-rounded individuals,” said Sharp, who works out of the conference’s headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama. “With everything that we do, we never lose sight of why we’re here.”
