Cari Champion featured in VOGUE
In life or at work, she does things her way – and people are taking notice
Cari Champion began her ESPN career in October 2012 and quickly became a trendsetter. Widely known as a SportsCenter anchor and the host of the podcast “espnW presents Be Honest with Cari Champion,” she is now the first female sportscaster to be featured in Vogue magazine since 1993.
“I was just honored that they even considered me,” Champion told The Undefeated.
“It was a very surreal experience. You go about your day-to-day, you do your job. You don’t think other people are watching – especially in a world in which you don’t think the two go together – fashion and sports – but they do. They just do. These two worlds really do coexist.”
Champion said she thinks Vogue is most comfortable being on the cutting edge of fashion and they saw that ESPN was doing something a little edgier than normal.
“We have so many different projects happening where we’re really taking an interest in trying to do things very differently and I think they appreciated that, which is great and I just happened to be a recipient of that.”
Champion always seeks to go above and beyond just doing her job.
“ESPN put me in a position to have a bigger platform. I appreciate that my hard work is being recognized. It’s more about that for me.
“For me to be recognized means OK, I’ve completed a step in the right direction. My passion, my goal, what I’ve always wanted to be – a storyteller, a broadcast journalist. It’s an honor to be recognized. It’s like wow, thanks. It was a really first-class experience,” Champion added.
