Mo Vaughn debuts a big and tall men’s clothing line
Because the husky fellas need nice clothes, too
Mo Vaughn, the three-time All Star and Major League Baseball MVP, has launched a line of men’s fashion clothing called MVP Collections, which includes graphic T-shirts, denim, tops and sweats in sizes XL to 4XL and denim sizes 38 to 50.
Years of searching for stylish clothes that fit his 6-foot-2, 230-pound frame is what piqued Vaughn’s interest in the plus-size men’s clothing business. The company’s first collection was made in the United States and has three categories: athleisure, weekend wear and night-out gear. All of the pieces are priced between $59 to $219.
Like many athletes who tend to be larger in size and height, after years of purchasing expensive custom clothes, Vaughn thought it was time to create a line that would be stylish and tailored specifically toward big and tall men.
“I was interested in this because there was nothing out there for big guys with style,” said Vaughn, who played for the Boston Red Sox from 1991 to 1998. “I always had a tailor, so that gave me the ability to go out and buy nice clothes. He was hooking me up day in and day out.”
Vaughn said he shopped in the big and tall departments of stores such as Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s. His height and weight made him “right on the cusp” between regular sizes and the big and tall section. “I was wearing 2X, maybe 2X tall and I just wanted to have the selection that everyone else had. You’d go out back in the day and look at all the big guys — you could tell exactly where they shopped.”
Vaughn and his business partner, fashion executive Diane Cutuli, handpicked the premium denim and luxe fabrics in the inaugural collection. “The men’s fashion industry is forever growing, but there are some challenges that designers are not addressing, like big and tall men’s clothing,” Cutuli said.
