Morehouse, at 6-0, is the only undefeated HBCU team left
Maroon Tigers had to play through to three overtimes to win 83rd Tuskegee-Morehouse Classic
It was an instant classic at the 83rd Tuskegee-Morehouse Classic on Saturday in Columbus, Georgia, as the Maroon Tigers remained undefeated at 6-0 by beating Tuskegee 30-24 in triple overtime.
Regulation ended in a 17-17 tie after Morehouse drove 52 yards to score on a Frank Bailey Jr. pass to Tremell Gooden with less than 2 minutes remaining. Both teams missed field goals as they tried to win the game.
Tuskegee scored on its second-overtime possession when Javarrius Cheatham found the end zone on a reverse, putting the Golden Tigers ahead 24-17.
Morehouse’s Santo Dunn scored, tying the game again and forcing the third overtime. Dunn scored a second time, from 14 yards out, and the 2-point conversion failed, making the score 30-24. Tuskegee failed to get a first down or score on its last drive.
Dunn rushed for 125 yards with three touchdowns, while Maroon Tigers quarterback Michael Sims was 24-of-32 passing for 196 yards. The Morehouse defense held Tuskegee’s Ahmad DeRamus to 145 yards passing and sacked him five times.
Next up for the unbeaten Maroon Tigers on Oct. 13 is Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Albany State.
In another much-watched historically black college game, Howard University against North Carolina Central University, Eagles quarterback Chauncey Caldwell had the game-winning touchdown run with 24 seconds left in the game to lead NCCU to a 40-35 victory.
Caldwell completed 24 of 38 passes for 311 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another 153 yards, while Howard quarterback Caylin Newton threw for 381 yards and three touchdowns on 24-for-39 passing.
A pair of Howard receivers posted big numbers. Howard’s Jequez Ezzard had eight receptions for 174 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, defensive back Davanta Reynolds led NCCU with 12 tackles.
