Black nerds showed out at the second annual convention designed for people of color
BlerDCon 2018 is the second installment of the annual comic and cosplay convention specifically organized for people of color. Black nerds (or “blerds”) and other people of color from across the country converged at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington, Virginia, from July 27 through July 29 dressed as their favorite characters from the worlds of anime, comic books and science fiction. There were plenty of homages to the Black Panther comics and blockbuster movie (of course), as well as a healthy mix of characters from DC Comics, Steven Universe, classic Looney Tunes cartoons and more. While comic and cosplay conventions have moved from niche to mainstream, BlerDCon is unique for its insistence on creating a safe space for traditionally marginalized communities. We can’t wait to see what 2019 brings.
