GAME. BLOUSES.
This weekend may have only had two days in it, but enough happened that it feels more like a week. Usain Bolt, the fastest man in the world, blew past American sprinter Justin Gatlin during Sunday night’s 100-meter final, becoming the first Olympian to take home three straight 100-meter gold medals. The United States women’s basketball team continues to deliver that work to squad after squad, and it’s becoming clearer — we may have sent a dream team to Rio de Janeiro. Speaking of domination, Michael Phelps may have finished his last race ever. If he goes out, Phelps does so covered — literally covered — in gold medals and admiration.
It can’t all be domination and blowouts, though. For the U.S. men’s basketball team, the (somewhat) struggle continued after squeaking out a three-point win over Rudy Gobert’s France team. Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s squad may be 5-0 so far, but Sunday’s win, combined with Friday’s three-point win over Serbia, mark the closest games for Team USA since it lost to Argentina in the semifinals of the 2004 Summer Games in Athens, Greece.
“This isn’t a tournament that we’re going to just dominate,” Team USA swingman Paul George said after the 100-97 victory over France. “There’s talent around this world and they’re showcasing it. For us, it’s just figuring out how we’re going to win. We’re having spurts of dominating, but we’re just not finding ways to put a full 40 minutes together.”
Wednesday’s quarterfinals await Team USA, but the opponent won’t be known until later Monday. One positive for the men’s team: Going into Sunday’s game, Klay Thompson was shooting 15 percent (4-for-26) from the floor and 17 percent (3-for-18) on 3-pointers through four games. After unloading for 30 points against France, the real Thompson has arrived.
