Dr. George Grant invented and patented the first golf tee in 1899. Born in 1847 to former slaves, he went on to make strides that would take the game of golf to another level. Before Grant’s invention, golfers used sand mounds from which to hit balls. He wasn’t looking to make history. The Harvard University graduate and prominent dentist was trying to make the game less frustrating for his golfing buddies in Boston.
